Ever wonder what civil engineers do?
Most of the things we do are usually so commonplace that people overlook them. Let me give you and idea of what we do. Ever drive to work on a road, flush a toilet, get a drink of water, fish or water ski at a reservoir, take commuter rail, drive over a bridge, land at an airport? These are just some of the things that civil engineers do. We are kind of peculiar bunch. We get a college education, get a professional license, maintain continuing education units, and work hard to improve the lives of those around us. Most of the stuff we do goes on behind the scenes with little recognition from the general public. That’s ok, we don’t care about the recognition. What we do care about is that our infrastructure is in good condition and functions efficiently and safely. Next time you drive to work, get a drink, flush a toilet take a minute to think that these things just didn’t happen. Civil engineers help make them happen.
